We understand that either in the course of your interaction with us or through the provision of our services to you, we may process (i.e collect, use, store, share, transmit, alter, destroy or perform other activities) on your personal information (personal data) provided to us or accessed by us through other means or third parties. Based on the foregoing understanding, we have set out this privacy notice (policy) to provide you adequate and necessary inform on how we process your personal data and for what purposes within the confines of relevant laws and regulations.
What Personal Data do We Collect
Subject to the necessity of respective interactions and transactions between you and UpThought, the personal data collected from you or other sources (may) include:
- Your names, email addresses, social media identity, telephone number, location, contact addresses.
- Your personal information contained in articles, books, manuscripts, papers, legal opinion, newsletter, proposals,
- Your images (as processed by the video conferencing apps) or at live events, your voice, views, opinions, etc.
How and Why do We Process your Data
To facilitate our business or other relationship with you, we process your personal data provided by you or obtained through a third party legitimately.
We also process your personal data:
- to facilitate dissemination of information about our educational activities
- for recruitment purposes
- to improve analytics and research etc
- for record keeping and accountability
On What Legal basis do We Process your Personal Data
Depending on the circumstances of our interactions with you, our legal basis for processing your personal data may be one of the following:
- For the performance of a contract, we have or about to enter with you
- Based on your consent or
- For our legitimate business interest or that of a third party
How do We get your Consent to Process your Data?
Your consent is given when you voluntarily surrender your personal information by providing us with documents (articles, papers, books etc) containing such information either for the purpose of doing business with us or for the purpose of participating in our activities.
When you also subscribe to any of our digital platforms to enable you participate in our Call for Papers or when you send us emails containing your personal data for the purpose of participating in our activities, you are consenting to our processing of your personal data.
How do I Withdraw my Consent?
If after we have processed your personal data, you change your mind, you may withdraw your consent to further processing of your personal data by contacting us at: kk@olp-law.com. Please note that such withdrawal of consent shall not affect the lawfulness of processing done based on consent before withdrawal.
What We do with your Data
To facilitate our legitimate business interests, your personal data may be shared with our employees, partners, vendors and other third parties within the confines of the relevant law and on the legal bases disclosed in this notice.
However, we will
- sell or rent your data to third parties.
- share your data with third parties for marketing purposes
- expose your data to unauthorized persons in our organization
How Long do We Keep your Data
We will only retain your personal data for as long as:
- the relevant law requires us to
- it is needed for the purposes set out in this policy or our contract with you.
- except you exercise your right to request deletion of personal data subject to the applicable law.
- as long as it is necessary.
Where your Data is Processed and Stored
We have set up organizational and technical measures to ensure safety of your personal data with us and unauthorized access or use. All personal data are stored in our data cloud except the ones stored via other means.
Your Rights as a Data Subject
Under the extant data protection laws in Nigeria, you have the following rights:
- right information on how your personal data is processed
- right of access to your personal data
- right to restrict further processing of your data
- right to object to processing of your data
- right to request deletion of your personal data
- right to rectification of your data
- right to request us to transfer your data to another entity electronically
- right to lodge complaint with the supervisory authority (NDPB)

Remedies
We will address any complaint or any violation of your privacy rights in accordance with the relevant and applicable laws. In the event of violation of your rights, you are also at liberty to file an action in court for redress or lodge a complaint with the supervisory authority.
Time Frame for Remedies
This shall be determined by a court of competent jurisdiction or the supervisory authority as the case may be.
